The Wedding Day Traditions.

The Wedding Day has traditions that have been practiced for years and that we still follow to this day. In this blog we will cover some of them and let you know why they are important for so many Couples.

The Night Before.

Why do a couple spend the night before the wedding apart? This tradition dates to the days of arranged marriages, when marriage was more of a business arrangement than something done for love. The couple were not allowed to see each other before the ceremony for fear they would pull out of the marriage!

Today, it is simply seen as unlucky to see your other half on the morning of your wedding celebration. Although, you should not be worried! Most people just choose not to see their other half just to build up that excitement and to give them a surprise when they walk down the aisle looking so beautiful. Capturing this photo as a wedding photographer is so important for us. We love seeing the groom well up and give his bride a big smile as she takes that long walk down the aisle.

Giving the Bride away.

This tradition also dates to when marriage was a business arrangement, and a Bride would be handed over to a “new owner,” This was usually in exchange for money. Thankfully, this is not the case now, and if a bride chooses to be “given away” it can be by anyone she chooses. This tradition has also been reinvented as we know that not every wedding has a bride. We have seen weddings where the walk down the aisle has been taken with Mums, Dads, Siblings, Friends and even Grandparents. It is just a lovely way to include those who you love in your bridal party. We have also seen a bride total totally ROCK that walk and do it on her own.

Why does a Bride stand on the left side of her groom?

The bride stands to the left of the groom during a traditional Christian wedding celebrations so that the groom can protect her with his left arm and use his sword with the right.

Years ago. When sword fighting was something that happened in everyday life, not just on a period drama. A Groom would need to fight anyone who was trying to steal his wife. Strangely this was from mostly members of her own family. In a Jewish wedding the bride would traditionally stand on the right.

Why do we Throw the confetti?

Guests used to throw Rice at the newly married couple to encourage fertility. The Victorians then started using shredded paper. Most venues now still allow confetti but will require it to be Eco-Friendly. Dried flower petals, even leaves make beautiful and are environmentally friendly. We have also seen bubbles, Sparklers and streamers which also look stunning in a photograph.

As you can see a Wedding Day is full of so many traditions, and we could have listed so many more. Do you need to follow all of these? Of course not, your wedding day, your rules, start your own traditions and enjoy one of the best days of your life.
